Is Thailand Safe From Corona Virus?

CODVID-19, or more commonly known now as the “Corona Virus” has been slowly spreading across Asia, with the most affected countries other then China being Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. Here in Thailand, life has been going on as per normal, with the public being aware and taking the necessary precautions.

Wondering if you should come to Thailand? At the time of this article, it’s still safe, and would be a great time to visit as the number of tourists have dwindled significantly. But, before you hop on a plane, check out the following precautions and preparations you may want to consider

Masks & Personal Hygiene

There is currently no indication that masks help prevent from getting infected with the virus. For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended by the WHO to use a mask in conjunction with regular washing of hands with water and soap or alcohol-based hand rub. We highly recommend visiting their page dedicated to the Corona Virus and how to protect yourself from it.

This would be your best defense against the virus. Refrain from touching your face without washing yours hands properly. And ensure you wash your hands often, especially when out in public.

Preparing For Your Trip

Flight Routes

There are some extra things to consider when travelling to Thailand. The first are transit flights from other countries; specifically, China, Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore. You shouldn’t be able to get any flights connected to China at the time of this article, but if you have booked your flight in advance and it is a transit stop, we highly recommend checking with the airline about changing your flight.

Stock Up

As a country not too far from China and with a booming Tourism industry, the locals have quickly stocked up on masks and alcohold-based hand rub. Most places in Thailand have sold out, and you will have a hard time trying to get either at a decent price.

It is highly recommended to get both from your country.

Don’t forget to get sun block too, as they have always been overpriced in Thailand by quite a big margin!

Insurance

Now is not a time to skimp on protection and “what if’s”, make sure you are covered by a traveler insurance plan. They are not too expensive these days and will help with any medical bills, Corona Virus or not. Make sure you read the fine print, and that they cover (partially, at least) hospital bills, medication and rescheduling of your flight.

Get out of the City

While the major cities like Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya are safe, you may want to try exploring the neighboring provinces like the recently featured Samut Songkram! As a relatively quiet town, you can fully experience the life of a local there, with a homestay on the banks of the Mae Klong River.

There isn’t much to worry about, but do take the necessary precautions, especially if you are making a stop at one of the countries listed above. With reasonably cool weather now, and with much less tourists visiting, you may not have a chance like this again!
